What We Treat: Alcohol and Substance Use Disorder
No two people experience the same pilgrimage when it comes to recovery. However, there are common substances that seem to plague our communities. We exist to be a practical resource that can help you restore the balance in your life and in your body.
Symptoms and Signs of Substance Use Disorders
Substances and people are different. Experiences with alcohol and drugs are even more so. However, there are certain criteria set forth to help you, your loved one, and professional providers identify substance or alcohol use disorders. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, at least two or more of the following criteria must be present within a 12-month period to diagnose a substance use disorder:[6]
- Unable to reduce or stop substance use
- Taking substance longer than intended or in greater quantities
- Intense cravings (for substances)
- Excessive amounts of time dedicated to acquiring, using, and recovering from use
- A disregard for interpersonal or social problems due to use
- Neglecting other obligations (work, home, school) due to use
- Risky or unsafe substance use
- Forsaking formerly loved activities in favor of substance use
- Ignoring physical or mental problems
- An increased dosage is required to combat tolerance
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when substance use suddenly stops
